Its main side effects are gastrointestinal upset, skin rash, headache, and ocular toxicity. Within the eye, hydroxychloroquine can adversely impact the cornea, ciliary body, and retina Plaquenil is a drug used to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis and Systemic Lupus Erythematosis. It is a very good drug and gives many patients significant relief from their symptoms. Plaquenil related eye complications are not common. Plaquenil can produce pigment changes in the macula of the retina. Plaquenil can cause serious side effects when used in high doses for chronic diseases such as RA over the long term. The New Zealand Dermatological Society recommends that to decrease the risk of retina damage, no more than 200mg of Plaquenil should be taken a day, and a dose of 400mg per day should be taken no longer than a few weeks.

When Plaquenil works, most patients start to feel improvement after 8-12 weeks. When patients start Plaquenil, doctors usually have them try it for 3 months before they assess the patient to determine if it is working. Plaquenil is also known as a treatment for malaria, a blood-borne parasite spread by mosquitoes in many tropical and sub-tropical environments. The usual dose is between one and two tablets per day (200 to 400 mg per day).

Has anyone experienced plaquenil toxicity with damage to eyes? Yesterday, he told me that there is some damage to the retina in one of my eyes. that the last three tests have had the exact results. He told me that the plaquenil stays in your system. it is not metabolized by the liver. Therefore, the damage is irreversible. He also told me that the damage can continue even after you stop taking the plaquenil.
