    Side effects of stopping hydroxychloroquine

So far I have no more energy than when I first started and has developed neuropathy which I have just found out from Web MD that this neuropathy is one of the side effects of this med! Saying that by stopping this it would take another 6 months to build up the benefit. There are other meds that can help with what you are experiencing, and if your doctor didn't address that then I would seek out a second opinion... Please don't stop your plaquenil until you are sure it is the right thing to do and in your best interest.

RARE side effects. If experienced, these tend to have a Severe expression. Abnormal Liver Function Tests. Acute Liver Failure. Acute Pustular Eruptions On Skin. Bronchospasm. Decreased Blood Platelets. Decreased White Blood Cells. Many people using this medication do not have serious side your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur arm/leg/ back pain, fast heartbeat, hair loss /color change, mental/mood changes e.g. anxiety, depression, hallucinations, ringing in the ears / hearing loss. Many systemic medications may cause retinal toxicity. One such commonly used medication for dermatologic and rheumatologic inflammatory conditions is hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil, a chloroquine derivative. It is used to treat many diseases including malaria, rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.

Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. Or maybe another doctor if you're not comfortable w/your current one.

I have read about people stopping P & flaring up. Those who stopped it abruptly had real problems similar to what you are experiencing. If you really need to get off it, I would taper down slowly, very slowly. There is a similar posting on Healthunlocked, "Why oh why did u stop taking plaquenil." You may want to check it out. What side effects can this medication cause? reading or seeing difficulties words, letters, or parts of objects missing sensitivity to light. blurred distance vision. seeing light flashes or streaks. difficulty hearing. ringing in ears. muscle weakness. bleeding or bruising of the skin. bleaching. Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. If you're gonna experiment, I went off it cold turkey as it didn't hurt to do it that way, but you better get back on before the summer or you could experience a flare-up.
