One such commonly used medication for dermatologic and rheumatologic inflammatory conditions is hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), a chloroquine derivative. It is used to treat many diseases including malaria, rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.

Utterback’s rheumatologist also referred her to neuro-ophthalmologist David Katz, MD, in Bethesda, Md. “We don’t know which patients might develop Plaquenil retinopathy, but the patient often can see it before the doctor can,” he says. Here are some important warning signs PLAQUENIL film-coated tablets cannot be divided, therefore they should not be used to treat patients who weigh less than 31 kg. For radical cure of P. vivax and P. malariae infections, concomitant therapy with an 8-aminoquinoline compound is necessary. Retinopathy has been reported to be higher when the maintenance dose is exceeded. Use For lupus erythematosus chronic discoid and systemic in patients who have not responded satisfactorily to drugs with less potential for serious side effects. Usual Adult Dose for Rheumatoid Arthritis

It is imperative that patients and physicians are aware of and watch for this drug’s ocular side effects. Retinal toxicity from hydroxychloroquine is rare, but even if the medication is discontinued, vision loss may be irreversible and may continue to progress.

Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil; HCQ has been an important and effective drug for the treatment of lupus erythematosus and related autoimmune and inflammatory diseases for half a century, although its potential to cause retinal damage continues to raise concern among rheumatologists and ophthalmologists. In some people, Plaquenil can cause a condition called hydroxychloroquine retinopathy, often referred to as bulls-eye maculopathy. The condition sometimes resembles a target, or bulls-eye ring, on the retina surrounding the macula. Hydroxychloroquine Professional Patient Advice - Hydroxychloroquine can be detected in the cord blood at delivery in concentrations similar to those in the maternal serum Costedoat-Chalumeau 2002. In animal reproduction studies with chloroquine, accumulation in fetal ocular tissues was observed and remained for several months following drug elimination from the rest of the body.

PLaquenil and drinking alcohol - Scleroderma - Inspire I have taken plaquenil since 1989 and have had no problem with the drug. I only get my eyes examined once a year now, as the Dr. felt I am tolerating the drug without complication. I am wondering though, if anyone also takes minocin or minocycline along with the plaquenil.
